In the town of Alice Springs in the year 2039, a fish falls from the sky and lands at the feet of Gabriel York. And it still smells of the sea. That's the scene set in Andrew Bovell's award-winning drama "When the Rain Stops Falling", making its San Diego premiere at Old Town Theatre. It's been raining for days and Gabriel knows something is wrong. Fifty years earlier, his grandfather Henry Law predicts that fish will fall from the sky heralding a great flood which will end life on earth as we know it. You know that guy, the one you befriended because he lived on your street, or sat next to you in class. You soon realize that he's socially inept, awkward or kinda creepy, but you don't know how to get rid of him without being a jerk. Now imagine that person has moved in with you, and you have the beginnings of Larry Shue's wacky comedy "The Nerd". The ultimate nice guy, Willum eagerly welcomes Rick into his home after a sporadic history of correspondence. How can he refuse? After all, Rick saved his life in the Vietnam War. But the heroic rescuer also turns out to be weird, inept and obnoxious. Willum feels too indebted to Rick to kick him out, so one uproarious incident after another ensues, until the normally placid Willum is driven into a desperate mental state that leads triumphantly to a surprising ending. Watch the drama hilariously unfold at Lamb's Players Theatre in Coronado. [less-]

Tray loves his grandmother and half-sister, works at a Brooklyn Starbucks, has a passion for boxing and hates having to write his college essay. And then, one day, he's in the wrong place at the wrong time and his life is cut short. What becomes of this spirited African-American teen's legacy? Playwright Kimber Lee's "brownsville song (b-side for tray)" -- inspired by actual events -- is a poetic and powerful tale of violence and innocence. Far from being a play "ripped from the headlines," "brownsville song" is an up-close and personal portrait of one very specific family, their memories and their struggle to hold onto hope. Delicia Turner Sonnenberg directs this heartfelt drama at San Diego's MOXIE Theatre. [less-]

La Marquise du Châtelet was a woman born in the wrong era. A brilliant mathematician and physicist, she was the toast of the Enlightenment. Nevertheless, she's not a very well known historical figure. Voltaire got it right when he said du Châtelet was "a great man whose only fault was being a woman." Now Lauren Gunderson's play "Emilie: La Marquise du Châtelet Defends Her Life Tonight" resurrects this fascinating personality. Emilie finds herself back in the world of the living, patting her body in surprise and wondering at the reason for her return. She soon becomes desperate to find out whether her challenge to one of Isaac Newton's equations was correct. "I died thinking: Was I right?" she explains. "Shortly followed by: Was I loved? Shortly followed by: Does either one really matter in the end?" This smart, surprising and sexy portrait of a true genius makes its San Diego premiere courtesy of New Village Arts. [less-]

Just in time for the 2016 presidential election, San Diego's Diversionary Theatre performs the West Coast premiere of "Now or Later". Playwright Christopher Shinn was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2008 for his "Dying City", and now he sets his sights on political drama. "Now or Later" unfolds on the night of a U.S. presidential election. A scandal has suddenly erupted over recently revealed photos of the candidate's son. A biting dark comedy and gut-wrenching psychological portrait of the breakdown of a marriage, "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" has been a mainstay of American theater since winning the 1963 Tony Award for Best Play. Later immortalized in a film adaptation starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, the play was written by the acclaimed Pulitzer Prize winner Edward Albee. The story follows George and Martha, middle-aged spouses who invite a younger husband and wife over for drinks and, over the course of the evening, use their guests as pawns in increasingly cruel mind games, leading to a devastating revelation. Razor-sharp dialogue and incisive character portraits abound in this powerful and funny Intrepid Theatre Company production of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" at the Horton Grand Theatre in San Diego. "I don't hate you," Rosemary says to Anthony. "I just don't like you." In the Tony-nominated "Outside Mullingar" by John Patrick Shanley ("Doubt", "Moonstruck"), these two introverted neighbors have lived in rural Ireland and known each other for years, but their lives intersect sharply when a parent dies and property rights come into question. Ultimately a tenderhearted romantic comedy, Shanley's play proves that love, whether early or late, always shows up right on time. Charles Isherwood of "The New York Times" raved, calling "Outside Mullingar" "Shanley's finest work since "Doubt"." San Diego Repertory presents this sweetly sentimental charmer at The Space Theatre at the Lyceum in San Diego. [less-]

While opposites don't always attract, they can make excellent comedy, at least in the case of "The Odd Couple", the Neil Simon play "The New York Times" declared, "the most famous American comedy of the last 50 years." Now you can see both the classic (male) version of the show and the 1985 gender-swapped female version, depending on which performance you choose to attend. When slovenly sportswriter Oscar/Olive Madison takes in his/her neurotic neat freak friend Felix/Florence Ungar, all comic hell breaks loose. The two get into increasingly heated squabbles over the state of the apartment, and a hilarious double date comes to an unexpected and comedic conclusion. Debuting on Broadway in 1965, the Tony Award-winning comedy inspired a movie starring Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon and a TV series starring Tony Randall and Jack Klugman. Come see why Neil Simon's comedy remains a beloved theatrical mainstay when "The Odd Couple" lands at Star Theatre in Oceanside -- and then see it again with a feminine twist. [less-]
